iPhone: how to use Emoji emoticons without Jailbreak

01Mar09

Apple has placed many restrictions upon its iPhone and iPod Touch products, one restricting emoticons. To get around this, you can either jailbreak your device or follow these steps:

1. Download this vCard file onto your desktop.
2. Send the file as an attachement to an email account on your device’s Mail app.
3. Open Mail on your device and open the email containing the vCard.
4. Scroll down till you see the attachment. Click on it, and click Import Contacts to add the emoji.
5. Go to Settings –> General –> International –> Japanese and enable the QWERTY keyboard.
6. Open any app of your choice with text input and click the globe icon to switch to Japanese. Type “emoji” (without quotes) and click the arrow key on the AutoComplete toolbar that appears. Out of the list, choose the icons you want. If some are inserted that you don’t need, you must individually delete them.

Remember, you can only view those emoji on your iPhone or iPod Touch.
