Apple: No More Tethering on AT&T, No More Pre Syncing

15Jul09

Apple recently released new versions of the iPhone and iTunes SDK. The main purpose of these updates is not to add or improve new features, but to remove some major holes in their software.

Another beta of the iPhone 3.1 SDK was part of the released items, and it held more disappointment for users than happiness. Apple disabled the carrier file exploit that people had been using to acheive tethering with their iPhones on AT&T. If you’ve been using this hack, you should wait till someone re-hacks it (probably very soon).

As many blogs predicted earlier, Apple has finally exposed their wrath on Palm for attempting to sync their device, the Palm Pre, with iTunes. The iTunes 8.2.1 update removes that loophole completely, and Palm has yet to find another method of accomplishing this. The current method that the Palm Pre used was desguising itself as an iPod, so that iTunes would recognize it. Palm has already responded by saying that its users “can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we can consider.”

Bad move, Apple, bad move. Thanks for angering some of your loyal customers. <!– Readers, do you understand now why Apple's mean moves are another reason for my hating them?

Oh, and finally, my little depiction (and a test with a new captioning font) of Apple's move:

Apple - Screw you. –>

Palm should make their own software. I totally agree with Apple on this one. Why would Apple want to lose money. Tell me.

    • Look at the situation. Apple isn’t losing money from having Palm let Pre’s sync with iTunes – they’re gaining money! That’s because users are drawn to new Apple products, to the iTunes Store, etc. The iTunes Store is one of the main revenue-generating products of Apple, and with Pre’s syncing to iTunes, Apple is going to get more users in the iTunes Store, and thus, more revenue.

And if you want tethering, Jailbreak.

    • In the post it says, “Apple disabled the carrier file exploit that people had been using to acheive tethering with their iPhones on AT&T.” This sentence is talking about the jailbreak! The exploit that tethering apps were using ceases to exist, so jailbreaking won’t let you tether. However, some new exploits have been found probably. Please read the article to avoid any confusion. Thanks!
